The key to the personal statement is to express our identity and talk about who we are and describe something unique about us could you tell us if there are any effective ways that we as students can effectively express our identity through our common FSA oh because we might be passionate about many things but is there any receptive way to convey our passions to the admissions officers well okay so I I think what you want to do is to choose one of those paths so as I suggested you may let’s say you have five passions and you’re trying to think about it the idea is not to say I am passionate about a B C D and E.
What you want to do is part of your process is to brainstorm maybe all five of those passions and then decide which one do you feel provide a the most important part of you the perhaps gives the broadest perspective about who you are and then it’s once you’ve decided which one you want to explore it’s sort of it’s what I was saying you you make a few statements but ultimately you want to tell stories about yourself that exhibit this passion so if you be one of the examples I gave is if you love art history I want to know I would I want to read you could write anywhere from three to seven lines describing one moment of how you interact with a painting just a few sentences both the painting how it affects you why it inspires you what it inspired maybe that painting inspired you to go out and do community service or draw a sculpture or come up with a mathematical equation I’m working with a student right now who’s a mathematician but he happens to have a love he discovered a love for art which is now informing what he wants to do and inspiring the interaction between arts and science.
And it’s helped him redefine what it means to live in a community and the idea of beauty the idea is to to just explore and then find a few key moments that you can use to illustrate this passion does that make sense yep no that’s that’s great Debbie can you one of the questions we get is you know you’ve done this for a long time you’ve seen every kind of topic are there some common mistakes that you see that students make in writing the essay and kind of how do we avoid them structurally or topic life because I oh I mean what’s something that you know you just see and it drives you crazy and you know kids continually do it year after year ah I would say just more look everyone has trouble writing so structurally you know I it’s hard to point out what what I have tried to emphasize is the importance of anecdotes and specific moments as opposed to a laundry list.
While still presenting data that shows that you improve them on some axes I would try to do that if you can that’s the flavor of the message I think that’s good one one more back here and then we’ll forgot a stop at lunchtime my my question about the details how deep to describe my system if it’s kind of complicated I mean one one on one hand I can go on on all the details on the other hand they can be like get like more over the overview but like what’s the balance so well so how detailed can you be it’s hard for me to answer that because pretty much it’s constrained by the paper right by the length of the paper you just don’t have much space right the the only thing I’d say is try to focus on your key idea put the details that articulate your idea and if the other kind of only loot loosely related stuff but that’s important to you like another paper. Find out how to correctly present data in your work at Edusson.
I don’t know I can say any more than that worthy yes at the back corner yeah so impending appendices for papers are a bit like technical ports they say you know we proved this theorem and if you want to see the proof here it is so that’s really good because it doesn’t drag the reader through the proof it says here’s where you can find the evidence if you want it or it might even be in you know online somewhere I think I think that’s good try not to put what you want to do is you want to put material that clearly is a kind of subroutine call away you get the payload from the theorem and then and they can go and find if they want that kind of thing supporting data good yeah we got we’re and we’re gonna stop for lunch key okay so one question sometimes you’re in-between feeds or yeah for really complicated the issue and you use somehow needs a gentle introduction to this a longer introduction where do you put it so I like that that’s writing across field papers and papers about complicated ideas is simply harder.
So you know sometimes that means you have to aim at a journal because conferences are often narrowly focused and sometimes are not very hospitable to cross field papers and if you need more space you may you may just need to say you know perhaps this is it you know almost semi tutorial that your survey paper sometimes I don’t quite know I’m not sure I can any say anything very meaningful in response to your question except to acknowledge that yes it’s harder and so if you the more initially particularly in the early stages of a search career the more you can focus on you know more single issue issue politics if you like the easier you’ll make make your life and then you can sort of try them one ambitious and difficult but still important I’m not saying it’s not important.
Not a good topic sentence is too narrow how about number two studying is difficult alright now some of you may agree with this sentence but again this is not a great topic sentence either and this is a mistake for the opposite reason as the first one in this case the sentence is too broad now what I mean by that is that it’s it’s too big of an idea to really be dealt with in a single paragraph there’s it’s not specific enough so a good topic sentence has to be somewhere between being too narrow and too broad you want it to be specific but not too specific that it’s a fact so it’s a very delicate kind of balance that you have to hit there with a good topic sentence.
Now in this case how can you make it more specific you have to ask things like what and who so studying is difficult studying what for example or difficult for whom who find studying difficult okay so again number two not a good topic sentence but a very again a common mistake that students make in their writing so let’s look at number three hopefully we’ll will do better with that one so Y values are disappearing so this is also not a very good topic sentence that I’m it has been kind of a trick question actually I think I’m trying to trick you a little bit why traditional values are disappearing is not a good topic sentence because it’s just an incomplete sentence it’s grammatically incomplete so not only do you need your idea to be not too broad or too narrow but you have to make sure that your sentence is grammatically correct and in this case this is what we call a sentence fragment which again we’ll deal with in another lesson more specifically but the problem here is that you’ve got a question word at the beginning of this of this clause there you’ve got a your subject and your verb but the subject and verb are not inverted so this is not a question because you see there’s a period there too.
So it looks like a question but it’s it’s not quite as actually what we call a noun clause grammatically incomplete and therefore not a good topic sentence yeah right all right so I am kind of tricking you as people are kind of noticing in the in the chat over there so let’s look at number four I would like to discuss in this paragraph the growing concern about air pollution in my city now this one’s open I mean it looks better right than the other ones but it’s still problematic it’s still not a good topic sentence and here’s why what you don’t want to do in academic writing you don’t want to announce your topic and you don’t want to announce your intentions so little phrases like I would like to discuss you don’t want to start a sentence with that.
The world of education is changing very fast. As the students are becoming more and more conscious about their career and profession, so these educational courses are also becoming increasingly versatile. There are many educational institutions available all over the world and most of these institutions offer various types of services and facilities. The educational institutions are engaged in various types of education. If you look at the present education systems, you can distinctively find two types of facilities, namely offline education, and online education. These systems are different in their application and outlook that is why the question of advantages and disadvantages always exists there. However, while making a comparative study you will find the following advantages in favor of the online or Internet-based education system.
– Accessibility from anywhere: These online courses are accessible from all parts of the country as they are conducted with the help of websites. These websites are made with great technical expertise and that is why the students get very good access to these online sites. However, the students are required to have an entire set up at their home that may include a computer with high-speed Internet service from a renowned and accepted service provider. This is important to get an uninterrupted Internet connection.
– Course can be conducted from the home: It is probably a great advantage for the students as they can go through the course from their own home. They can pay more attention towards their studies as they are not required to get out of their home for attending these courses. They can save a greater amount of money and energy for themselves that they can spend for their studies. They can spend more time with their course by maintaining their focus towards their study material.
– Lower fee structures: Most of these online universities offer these courses at relatively lower fees. It is certainly beneficial for all students irrespective of the financial status. However, they are more beneficial for the students who come from the poorer economic background. They find it more applicable as the modes of payments are also manageable for them.
– Courses are fit for additional qualifications: There are many people who wish to gather more qualification without joining any course directly as they are the working professionals. These online courses can be very fruitful for them as they can do their studies in their off times. That is why the importance of these online courses has increased manifold. It is expected that these courses will be more popular among the people.
We do many things in prayer. Sometimes we thank God for things. Sometimes we praise God. But sometimes we ask God for things. We are encouraged, in fact, to present our needs to God. But this is odd. Doesn’t God already know what we need? Furthermore, if God is eternal, then it seems as though God could not change. So why present my needs to God if he can’t do anything about it?
These are deep questions about the very meaning of prayer. In this post, I would like to offer a hypothetical answer. My answer turns on the concept of a sacrament. This concept may be the central concept of Catholic Christianity. A sacrament is an instrument used by God to bless, heal, or convey grace. The objects used by God in this way are entirely ordinary but God has set them aside to use them as a vehicle of grace. We can understand the nation of Israel as a sacrament used to bless the world. The scriptures can be understood sacramentally. So can Jesus.
But what about prayer? Could prayer be a sacrament? It seems likely. God could in fact use people’s prayers as a vehicle for blessing or conveying grace. How would this work? Well, God could choose to bless my mom, for example, by answering my prayers for her. The answering of my prayer is the particular form or way in which God blesses my mom. If you will, my prayer opens up a channel that God can then use to convey blessings or grace. Much in the way that God brings grace through the baptismal waters why can’t he use prayers in the same way? If we understand prayers in this sense, then petitionary prayer seems to make more sense as part of the broader sacramental system by which God blesses the world. Of course, God could bless the world without the use of any physical element. Nevertheless, he seems to choose to use sacraments to convey his grace. Perhaps prayer is just another one of these sacraments.
There have been a number of books recently on the phenomenon on Near Death Experiences (NDEs). These are reports based on remembered experiences written by people who have physically died for a few minutes and then are brought back to life. Some people report dramatic experiences of bright lights, heightened consciousness, visions of heaven, a life review, a great sense of peace, visiting with dead loved ones, etc. These experiences are pretty common with 5% of the population at any given time reporting to have had such experiences. They also occur in every country and culture studied and seem to have occurred even in the distant past (there are ancient drawings of tunnels and dead people flying up into them.) The best recent account of such an experience is certainly Eben Alexanders popular book Proof of Heaven (2012). The book is an exhilarating read and vividly written.
Another recent book is Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near Death Experiences (2011). I find some interesting statistical summaries in the second book, but the book is a bit forced in my view. There is too much talk about how scientific all of this is. Also, some of the used methods are not particularly compelling. For example, while reviewing the stories submitted to the website one of the criteria for determining if the story is fabricated is whether it seems believable to the authors of the study. Unsurprisingly almost all the reports make it into the study. I am not sure that this is a bad thing because having lots of reports is probably a good thing (even if some unknown percentage are invented.) But there may be some sort of selection bias operating here.
Nevertheless, a few things are pretty clear. First, it is hard to believe that all of these people are simply lying. I do believe that a lot of these people (for example, Alexander) are more or less accurately reporting remembered experiences that they had. So I think it that most of these people are honest. There is a lot of overlap among the different stories which suggests that there is a common cause which is giving rise to these experiences (perhaps a fact about human brains perhaps a fact about the beyond.) But it seems that lots of people (something like millions of people alive today) have had such experiences that were in many respects pretty similar. Third, the people who have these experiences believe that they are real. Most have no doubt at all about the reality of their experiences and so the reality of the afterlife.
But are all of these experiences evidence for the existence of an afterlife? Most philosophers and scientists seem to think no. The reasoning here goes like this: All of these experiences seem to (or could) arise from the brain activity. At the time of death the brain undergoes a pretty dramatic change and this change can cause the brain to fire in certain ways that cause dramatic experiences. Since these experiences can be traced to the functioning of the brain, they must be illusory.
This type of reasoning is extremely common, but I think that it is deeply flawed. If I were able to track your brain, I would see your brain firing in certain complex ways. But I cannot infer from this that your experience is an illusion and that the sun does not really exist. Rather the sun is affecting your brain and your brain is producing the conscious experience. If all we knew about was the activity of the brain then it would be pretty hard to tell whether there was an external cause or not. Perhaps the brain activity is caused by some external thing (e.g., the sun) or perhaps it is some kind of an illusion.
There is a common idea that human beings are not really special, valuable, or important. We know that we do not live at the center of the universe but in a fairly random place three quarters of the way out in an average spiral galaxy which itself is just one of billions. We occupy an inconceivably small part of the universe. With this discovery we have learned that we are not actually special. We are just a small and insignificant species. We really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. I have heard versions of this argument from almost every thoughtful atheist with whom I have had the pleasure to speak about such things.
This problem is that this argument includes a hidden assumption which is almost certainly false. The assumption is that the value of something is directly proportional to its size and location. The larger the amount of space something takes up, the more valuable it is. The closer something is located to the center of the universe, the more valuable it is. (Though my physics friends tell me that the center of the universe itself is growing along with space-time, so perhaps this should read the center of the center.) But why do they think so? Why can’t something be small or rare and valuable? In fact, one might think that the rarity of something increases rather than decreases its value. Similarly, why do they believe that the most valuable things exist at the center of the center of the universe? I see this assumption as utterly unjustified. But once we reject this assumption, it is hard to see how to draw any inferences at all concerning our value from our physical size and location. You can see that the borderline of this discussion is quite simple: atheists deny the value and unique characteristics of our civilization and use this argument in order to prove that God doesn’t exist while we claim that the location of our planet shouldn’t be taken into consideration when we discuss matters which have nothing to do with physics, they are all about faith.

In an article Saturday in Slate magazine, Daniel Gross makes a case for a job recovery sooner than later. Using productivity as a key economic indicator, Gross writes, “we’ve just witnessed the fastest two-quarter productivity surge since the first year of the Kennedy administration. . . but just as hamsters can run only so fast on their treadmills, there are limits to productivity growth.”
Gross goes on to relate a footnote by Michael Darda, Chief economist at MKM Partners, who says, “Should the economy expand in the fourth quarter at the same 2.5 percent annual rate it did in the third quarter—as it shows every sign of doing—companies won’t have any choice but to hire.”
It’s an interesting argument. I’m not sure I agree with Mr. Gross on how fast this economy is recovering (or Mr. Darda either, for that matter). Most other economists are telling us that it’s going to be Q3 or Q4 of 2010 before we start to see any real job growth in this country. But what is Gross and Darda are correct? Are you ready to get hired when things start picking up again? If not, here are 3 things you can do to prepare yourself:
1) Get clear about what you have to offer. You don’t have to be stuck doing something you don’t love doing, even if you are good at it. In order to effectively promote yourself, you will need to show quantified results you have had in your past on things you are both capable of and willing to do in the future. You should have 3 – 4 clear key areas in which you shine. Then you should have 4-5 clear statements that prove you can do these things.
2) Get focused on EXACTLY what you are looking for. If you don’t know what you want how can anyone else help you find it? Focus your career objective to one (two at the most) position. Then use your clearly articulated statements from #1 above to help brand yourself as an expert in that area.
3) Get connected. You have no doubt heard the statistics on networking and finding a practical job. More than 60% of job seekers find their next opportunity through someone they know. To be effective at networking you need to offer value to the people in your network. Don’t just try to sell yourself. Identify needs of the people with whom you are networking and try to help them. That way they will both remember you and want to reciprocate with you by finding opportunity for you.
Sooner or later this economy will turn around. The question is, will YOU be ready to take advantage of opportunities when they come along?
Why ask the saints to pray for us? Wouldn’t it just make more sense to go to the source? Why not just send my prayer requests directly to Christ?
These are good questions. In his wonderful new book on the Trinity, Fr. Michael Gaitley provides an intriguing and daring answer to this question. His answer comes in three steps.
Step One: Christians Become Incorporated Into Christ. It isn’t that Christians become Christ-like or similar to Christ in some way. They literally become part of the Body of Christ. This isn’t a metaphor. Rather there is a literal ontological change that a Christian undergoes when she comes incorporated into the Body of Christ. Christ literally dwells in us and we dwell in him.
Step Two: After Death, the Saints join in with the Second Person of the Trinity. Heaven, on this view, is a participation in the inner life of God. We participate in the inner life of God by means of the Second Person of the Trinity. He writes that our participation in the life of the Trinity is to become one of the persons of the Trinity. Specifically, we become part of the Incarnate Son (p. 55). Now we will never become the Divine Head, but we will somehow be incorporated into the Divine Body of the Second Person. We will become a small part of it. We will join in with the activity that takes place within the inner life of God. In this way, we will reign with God over all that is. We will reign with him because we will literally be incorporated into him.
Step Three: Praying to a Saint is Another Way of Praying to Christ. When we ask a saint to pray for us, what we are doing is praying to the Body of Christ. Because the saints are literally incorporated into the Second Person, God the Father can act through the saints much as he acts through Christ. They are in complete harmony with the Father and have become a small bit of the Second Person. Praying to a saint is another way of praying to Christ.
I consider this a daring and thrilling understanding of the saints. It makes sense of many otherwise puzzling ideas like how we will reign with God But we still must be careful to distinguish the Head from the Body within the Second Person. This image also gives a much more interesting understanding of heaven and how God will one day be all in all.
